Spring flowers

These have been  making everything more lovely at home over the last week – all from the allotment.

The cowslips are slowly spreading around the allotment space and have been in my room. The Lilacs also have some flowers from what I call the potato plant, I don’t know it’s real name but it is part of the nightshade family like potatoes and has the same distinctive small star shaped purple flowers.

I have started searing the stems for the flowers on the advice of the Sarah Raven book I’ve been reading and it does seem to make a difference. All it involves is a quick dip in some freshly boiled water (keeping the flowers away from the steam) the trick is to put the stem in for the right amount of time based on how woody it is – too long and you cook it rather than break down the cells just enough to increase water uptake.

The next step is to make sure I add cut flower food / water cleaner – there is a recipe given for a home made version that I am going to try out.
